La critica ha elogiat aquesta novel·la que va ser finalista del premi Man Booker a l’any 2008.
Comparada amb La conxorxa dels ximples de Kennedy Toole i també amb l’escriptor John Irving, Steve Toltz ens descriu la dificil relació entre un pare i un fill, però la novel.la va molt més enllà i ens ofereix un univers propi on el lector viurà i també patirà amb la galeria de curiosos personatges que hi apareixen; en Terry Dean és un assassí d'esportistes que arreglen partits,
el seu germà Martin Dean, un personatge solitari que no para d’anotar le seves reflexions filosofiques i esbojarrades en diverses llibretes. Finalment l’altre narrador de la història, en Jasper, fill del Martin Dean que ens descriurà els seus sentiments d’amor i odi envers al seu pare
